Eczema Awareness: How to Care for Dry, Sensitive & Compromised Skin

When your skin feels dry, itchy, uncomfortable or easily irritated, it can be tempting to keep adding products in the hope that something will help. But when it comes to eczema-prone and sensitive skin, simpler is often better.

For Eczema Awareness, we're looking at the importance of the skin barrier, why gentle skincare matters and some of our favourite products at The Bliss Room for supporting dry, sensitive and compromised skin.

It's important to remember that eczema is a medical skin condition. Skincare can help support the skin barrier and maintain hydration, but it does not treat or cure eczema. If you're experiencing persistent, severe or worsening symptoms, speak to your GP or dermatologist.

What Is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a condition that can cause the skin to become dry, itchy, inflamed and uncomfortable.

Symptoms vary considerably from person to person. Some people experience occasional areas of dryness and irritation, while others live with more significant or recurring flare-ups.

One thing that becomes particularly important for eczema-prone skin is the skin barrier.

Why Is the Skin Barrier So Important?

Think of your skin barrier as your skin's protective shield.

A healthy barrier helps keep moisture in and potential irritants out. When that barrier isn't functioning as effectively as it should, the skin can lose moisture more easily and become dry, uncomfortable and increasingly reactive.

That's why our approach to sensitive and eczema-prone skin focuses on:

Gentle cleansing. Hydration. Moisturisation. Barrier support. Protection.

And importantly – avoiding the temptation to overdo things.

1. Cleanse Without Stripping Your Skin

Cleansing is still important, but that fresh, squeaky-clean feeling isn't necessarily something to aim for when your skin is already dry or sensitive.

Choose a gentle cleanser that removes everyday impurities without leaving your skin feeling tight.

Epionce Milky Lotion Cleanser

One of our favourite recommendations for dry and sensitive-feeling skin, Epionce Milky Lotion Cleanser provides gentle cleansing with a creamy texture.

It's a great option when you're trying to keep your routine simple and comfortable.

O Cosmedics Nourishing Cleansing Balm

For those who prefer a balm texture, O Cosmedics Nourishing Cleansing Balm is another lovely option.

Its rich, nourishing feel makes it particularly appealing when skin is dry, depleted or in need of some extra comfort.

2. Focus on Hydration & Barrier Support

When skin is dry and compromised, adding moisture and supporting the skin barrier should be a priority.

This is also where we'd generally favour a carefully considered routine over layering lots of different active ingredients.

Epicutis Lipid Serum

The Epicutis Lipid Serum is a beautiful option for a routine focused on barrier support.

Epicutis takes a minimalist, science-led approach to skincare, and the Lipid Serum is designed to support healthier-looking skin while helping improve the appearance of redness and irritation.

Its barrier-focused approach makes it particularly interesting for anyone whose skin has become dry, sensitised or compromised.

3. Give Very Dry Skin an Extra Hydration Boost

There are times when your usual moisturiser may not feel like quite enough – particularly during colder weather or when environmental factors leave your skin feeling especially dry.

O Cosmedics Hydra Plus Sleep-In Mask

The Hydra Plus Sleep-In Mask is a great addition when your skin needs an extra boost of hydration.

Used as part of your evening routine, it can help leave dry skin feeling more nourished and comfortable.

4. Support Your Skin's Microbiome

We're learning more and more about the relationship between the skin barrier and the skin's microbiome.

Sásta Microbiome Booster Serum

Sásta Microbiome Booster Serum is another product we love for routines focused on overall skin health.

It can be incorporated into a routine where the goal is to support balanced, healthy-looking skin rather than continually introducing stronger actives.

5. Be Careful With Exfoliation

If your skin feels dry, irritated or compromised, now may not be the time to reach for strong exfoliating acids or aggressive scrubs.

Over-exfoliating can leave an already vulnerable skin barrier feeling even more uncomfortable.

If you regularly use retinoids, acids, peels or other active products and your skin suddenly becomes sensitive, speak to your skincare professional about whether your routine needs to be temporarily adjusted.

With sensitive skin, more isn't always more.

Sometimes giving your skin fewer, carefully chosen products is exactly what it needs.

6. Don't Forget Your SPF

Sensitive skin still needs daily protection from UV exposure.

A broad-spectrum SPF should be the final step of your morning routine, even during autumn and winter.

If your usual sunscreen irritates your skin, speak to us about finding an SPF better suited to your individual skin needs rather than skipping protection altogether.

A Simple Routine for Dry, Sensitive Skin

If you're unsure where to start, keep things straightforward.

Morning:
Gentle Cleanser → Hydrating/Barrier-Supporting Serum → Moisturiser → SPF

Evening:
Gentle Cleanser → Hydrating/Barrier-Supporting Serum → Moisturiser

Then introduce additional products only when your skin needs them.

When skin is irritated, this isn't the time to experiment with every trending ingredient on social media. Consistency and simplicity can be far more valuable.

Listen to Your Skin

Your skin doesn't stay exactly the same throughout the year.

Cold weather, central heating, stress, illness, hormonal changes and environmental factors can all influence how it feels.

If something that normally works suddenly stings or leaves your skin uncomfortable, don't assume you need to push through it.

Your routine should adapt to your skin.
